Any time I meet an older woman who has raised goldy children, I long to ask her wisdom. If every single adult child launched from your home loves Jesus, the church, and God’s word, excuse me while sit at your feet and take diligent notes.
A couple years ago I met such a woman- Mrs. Ruth. David was preaching at a local sister church, and I was chatting with an older lady before service. One by one she told me of her four children all leading Bible studies or serving in their churches around the country. I listened to her talk, then I asked my burning question: “What is the secret, Mrs. Ruth? What is the secret to raising children who love Jesus, take the word of God seriously, and stand strong in this culture? How did you do it?”
She smiled the biggest smile, and said confidently “I’ll tell you the secret.” I’ll never forget it.
She took a step back from me and pointed to her knees. “That’s how,” she said.
It was some of the best mothering advice I’ve ever gotten. And it didn’t even have any words.
Prayer. Mrs. Ruth claimed none of her own wisdom, her own faith, her choice of schooling, her own anything. With one silent gesture, all glory went to the Lord and all boasting terminated in him. Utter dependence on Christ in prayer. Message received, Mrs. Ruth.
I long for my children to love and enjoy Christ all their lives. After talking to Mrs. Ruth, I’m sure praying more. Does that mean if your kids are far from God, he didn’t hear your prayers? Of course not. It means stay on your knees. Before Augustine, Spurgeon, Talyor and so many other spiritual leaders turned to Christ, they had devout praying mamas!
Are you a Mrs. Ruth? Have you launched godly children from your home? Do you have the treasure of seeing your grandchildren raised in the Lord, the gospel being passed to the next generation? Glory to God. Please encourage those of us who long for this. Don’t shrink back but come alongside us. We need your presence, your encouragement, and all your wisdom– with or without words.
